THE SIX OBJECTIVES OF NALSA(K)

NALSA(K) is an acronym for The National Assembly Lady Spouses Association of Kenya A
non-partisan, non-political and multi-cultural association composed of lady spouses of th
honourable Members of our National Assembly.
Eligibility for membership is from all the national assembly constituencies of Kenya (290).
Our diversity is the source of our unity. As an organisation, duties and responsibilities
originate from the following six objectives:
● To offer a supportive role to our spouses as current or former Members of
Parliament.
The spouses of national assembly members are encouraged to join NALSA(K) regardless of
their political affiliation to support our spouses elected into office to serve their constituents.
We independently conduct its empowerment and development initiatives using resources
from our collective or individual networks.
Our individual networks offer support to some of the initiatives in the constituencies that we
represent i.e when schools need book donations, measuring and distribution exercise for
school uniforms to public schools and facilitating mentorship, counselling and training of teen mothers
Our activities are purely complementary work to our spouses. Importantly, our activities are
independent of the NG-CDFworks usually conducted in the constituencies.
A good comparison to the function of NALSA(K) is the Office of the First Lady of Kenya
conducting activities independently but in support of the spouse, the President of Kenya.
● To promote skills development & social interaction among our members.
Membership to NALSA(K) is diverse and inspirational because it comprises members with
skill sets, qualifications and professional experiences where we share and learn from one
another.
The skill development and social interaction prevailing transcend political, race, ethnicity,
social status, colour, age, disability, religion, conscience, belief, culture, dress, language or
birth differences. That is per the constitution of Kenya.
● To enhance the socio-economic growth of women, youth & children through
grass root & national efforts.
We conduct activities that directly impact the lives of women, youth and children
countrywide. Some of the activities include building sanitation facilities for schools,
refurbishing/constructing school blocks, re-integrating teen mothers back to school and
supporting the economic activities of some of these women groups. Economic
empowerment is in the form of donating water tanks to teen mothers of Kaloleni constituency
to enable them collect and sell water. Business training and participation in trade expos like
for the women who impact climate change by manufacturing and selling briquettes in
Alego-usonga.
To create awareness & impact knowledge on the social & economic well-being
of our members.
Being a NALSA(K) member comes with individual and collective responsibility. Therefore, it
is significant that we conduct capacity building to enable the effective handling of duties.
For instance, The COVID19 pandemic affected us too. Some of our projects and plans inevitably
were at a standstill. However, we resorted to conducting virtual sessions during the Covid period
dubbed #ImprovingUs Series. We were able to interact with one another while working on
bettering ourselves. This series helped us fulfil our objective to promote skills development &
social interaction among our members even while at a distance far away from physical
interactions.
● To establish partnerships & linkages with organisations with similar mandates.
For some of our projects, we seek partnerships with similar-minded organisations to enable
us to meet our goals. One of our most recent and significant partnerships is with Proudly
Kenyan. Proudly Kenyan is an organisation to conduct social and community outreach
programmes in the country.
The partnerships enable us to offer better sanitation in public schools, integrate teen
mothers into society, refurbish worn-out school blocks, donate reusable sanitary pads to
girls, initiate the construction of a dispensary, start green energy initiatives and also launch
economic empowerment projects in the communities.
● To facilitate the preservation of our environment for posterity.
NALSA(K) members are responsible for coming up with their initiatives as per the issues and
unique needs within their respective constituencies of representation. Within some of the
constituencies, there are environmental impact programs like our vice chair, Sally Atandi’s
organisation Women United For Our Future (WUFOF). WUFOF is planting trees and making
briquettes as an alternative energy source for cooking.
Conclusion
The six objectives are what guides us in working towards a better and inclusive society.
Since 2014 when the organisation was founded, we support our spouses by working for the
common good of the people in our areas of representation, we come together to train
ourselves to be better leaders and ultimately empowering girls and women from all walks of
life in the country.
