The Inspiring Journey of the Mwarema Women Self-Help Group

Within the bustling region of Kilifi South Constituency, the Mwarema Women Self-Help Group shines as a testament to empowerment, resilience, and unity. This determined group of women has come together to uplift themselves and their families through collective action and mutual support.
One of their recent milestones involved reaching out to Kilifi South N.A.L.S.A (K) representative, First Lady Miriam Kiti, for assistance. Through her support, the group received cooking pots (sufurias), which have become a valuable resource for community events like weddings. By renting out these sufurias, the women generate much-needed income to support their children’s education, from college to technical training.
Looking to diversify their sources of income, the group is now focusing on livestock farming. The addition of goats offers not only sustenance but also business opportunities, ensuring a steady income stream for the women and their families. Beyond financial growth, the Mwarema women prioritize one another’s well-being, using income from their ventures to assist each other with medical needs and other challenges.

As they continue to make strides, the women have identified a need for further support. Training workshops on conflict resolution and business management, organized by local leaders, could address challenges and enhance their entrepreneurial efforts. They also aspire to expand their resources, such as acquiring more tents and chairs for community use, which would significantly boost their income-generating activities.

“We are grateful for the support we’ve received so far,” said Mbuche Chilango, the group’s chairperson. “But we ask our leaders to remember us again, as we still need more resources to grow and better serve our community.”

“The sufurias will help us during weddings, we will hire and the money will be used as a group to take our children to school or college,” says Mbuche Chilango, Chair Mwarema women’s group, Kilifi South Constituency.
The Mwarema Women Self-Help Group stands as a powerful example of how unity and determination can transform lives. Their journey highlights the importance of education, entrepreneurship, and resource management in achieving greater independence. With their continued efforts, these women are not only improving their own lives but also inspiring future generations to believe in the power of collective action.
