FOSTERING COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT IN SIGOWET-SOIN: SARAH KEMEI’S POULTRY PROJECT.

Mrs. Sarah Kemei, the National Assembly Lady Spouses Association of Kenya (NALSA-K) representative
for Sigowet-Soin Constituency held an empowerment event that saw 9000 chicks distributed to
women’s group in the constituency. During the event the women were also trained on poultry farming
for business. Where they were taught on how to set up the poultry houses, poultry nutrition, disease
management and marketing strategies.

Globally, equality and economic empowerment are essential goals for all nations. In this regard, Mrs.
Sarah Kemei, has embarked on a transformative journey through her poultry project. Her initiative not
only encompasses the distribution of knowledge on business and poultry management but also extends
to providing chicks to women’s groups.

The NALSA-K Representatives looks to support marginalized women through empowerment projects in
the constituency giving focus to single mothers.
” Single women in our constituency barely get any recognition or support. Considering most of them are
poor, alone and lacking education, the project envisions a form resource facilitation to support start-up
businesses.” Stated Mrs. Sarah Kemei.

She highlighted that the distributed chicks will aid the women to start their own poultry farms for
businesses which is significant in bettering their lives and the entire community. She explained that
poultry farming is not only a pathway to economic empowerment but also a means towards food
security and improved nutrition in Sigowet-Soin. This she explained that this will enhance production of
eggs and poultry meat which will have a significant impact on the diet of families by providing access to
fresh, protein-rich food sources that helps combat malnutrition and improve the overall health of the
community.

In many societies, women are historically marginalized and experience limited economic opportunities.
However, Sarah’s project is changing the narrative by equipping Sigowet-Soin women with skills and
resources to become successful poultry farmers in the foreseeable future. The significance of this
project goes beyond economics and food security. It has a profound social and cultural effect. The form
of empowerment enables women to tackle head-on traditional gender stereotypes. It sends a powerful
message that women can be successful entrepreneurs and agents of change in the community.

Additionally, the surplus poultry products can be sold in local markets, generating income. This roadmap
promotes self-sufficiency and reduces the reliance on expensive, imported food sources.
Sarah Kemei’s poultry project is a beacon of how a single initiative can have a far-reaching impact on
transforming a community. Through empowerment of women, fostering community development,
guaranteeing food security and good nutrition, and challenging gender stereotypes, live are positively
transformed.
