A NEW DAWN FOR STUDENTS IN KAVUMBU

A NEW DAWN FOR STUDENTS IN KAVUMBU
November 8, 2024NALSANALSA EMPOWERSPROUDLY KENYAN

Kavumbu Primary School, located in the heart of Mbooni Constituency, has long been a symbol of resilience amidst adversity. For years, students and teachers endured the harsh conditions of dilapidated classrooms that offered little protection from the elements. “In the 1990s, the community came together, crafting bricks to build these classrooms. The floors were bare earth, and the structures were meant to be temporary. However, they became permanent, and with time, the challenges only grew,” shared Dr. David Kasanga, the school’s board of management chairperson.

With cracked walls, missing doors, and constant exposure to rain, dust, and even wildlife, the classrooms were barely habitable. Students often shivered in the cold, their books soaked from the rain that leaked through the cracks, while teachers struggled to create a productive learning environment. Concerned parents, troubled by the unsafe and uncomfortable conditions, considered transferring their children to other schools—but for many, Kavumbu Primary was the only choice.

But then came a turning point for the school. First Lady Juliana Kavasu, in partnership with Proudly Kenyan, decided to take action. Moved by the school’s dire situation, she spearheaded a transformative project to build brand-new classrooms, fully equipped with everything the students had long been missing. The new classrooms featured spacious, tiled floors, large windows that allowed natural light to flood in, and the addition of electricity. The contrast to the old, crumbling structures was nothing short of remarkable.

The ripple effect of this transformation was felt throughout the community. Parents, relieved that their children now had a secure and comfortable environment in which to learn, expressed heartfelt gratitude. “We are so happy that our kids can now focus on their education in a better environment,” said Winfred Peter, one of the parents. “We are deeply grateful to the First Lady and NALSA-K for listening to our cries.”

Looking to the future, First Lady Juliana Kavasu has big plans for Kavumbu Primary. “We hope that the improved infrastructure will encourage the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to allocate more staff to the school to meet the growing needs of the students,” she shared. Her vision extends beyond the classrooms; she aims to renovate the school’s kitchen, which has deteriorated over the years, to create a safe and modern space where nutritious meals can be prepared for the students, further promoting their health and well-being.

Each day, as the students walk into their new classrooms, they are not just stepping into a place of learning—they are stepping into a brighter future. The pride and gratitude that radiate from their voices and faces are a testament to the impact of this project. As First Lady Juliana Kavasu concluded, “What began as a simple project to replace classrooms has blossomed into a beacon of hope, dignity, and opportunity for Kavumbu Primary School. We are grateful for the support of our partners, Proudly Kenyan, and look forward to achieving even more together.”
