New Water Tank Brings Lasting Change to Kalawa Primary School, Kitui Central

“For a long time, we struggled with water problems, carrying water from home just to have enough for drinking, cooking, and cleaning,” shared Faith Mutunga, a student at Kalawa Primary School. “It’s been especially tough for those of us who come from far away.”
Despite these challenges, the students of Kalawa Primary have remained committed to their education, inspiring NALSA Kenya and Proudly Kenyan to take action by installing a new water tank at the school, located in Kitui Central Constituency.
The region faces ongoing water challenges due to unpredictable weather and prolonged dry spells exacerbated by climate change. These conditions have left the school in urgent need of a reliable water source. “Water shortages are a constant struggle here, which is why this tank from NALSA Kenya and Proudly Kenyan is so essential. It will allow us to harvest clean rainwater, helping to prevent diseases and provide water for daily activities,” explained Mrs. Makali.

Previously, the lack of sufficient water made meal preparation difficult, leading to hunger, thirst, and increased absenteeism. Students also struggled to keep their lunchboxes and utensils clean, posing health risks. Recognizing these critical issues, NALSA Kenya, a group comprising spouses of National Assembly Members, partnered with Proudly Kenyan to provide Kalawa Primary with a dependable supply of safe water. “I want to thank NALSA Kenya and Proudly Kenyan for this tank, as it’s helped solve many of the challenges we face, especially during dry seasons,” expressed Evans Muli, a grateful student.
This initiative aligns with NALSA Kenya’s mission to support socio-economic growth and improve the well-being of women, youth, and children in underserved communities. The impact goes beyond immediate needs, contributing to better health and academic performance for the students.
“As a parent, I now encourage my children to get to school early, without the burden of carrying water. It allows them to focus on their studies without exhaustion,” said Jane, a parent of a Kalawa Primary student.

NALSA Kenya’s partnership with Proudly Kenyan demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainable development. Through this effort, they are improving the quality of life for the Kalawa community while promoting resource preservation. “These pupils were bringing 5-liter jerry cans daily during the dry season,” noted Robert Mumo, the school’s head teacher. “I am immensely grateful to NALSA Kenya, Proudly Kenyan, and Mrs. Agnes Makali for their support.”
The entire school community expressed deep gratitude for the generous contribution. “May God bless you. As the Bible says, blessings come according to the work of our hands,” said Evans, one of the students.
“This donation has not only transformed our daily learning environment but also given us hope for a brighter future,” the head teacher remarked. “It will significantly reduce absenteeism and boost morale, as students can now focus on their education without worrying about water shortages for basic needs.”
